Headliner, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies were in Salem for the event.  Many locals remember the band’s start up days playing in venues around Salem. Originally from Eugene, Oregon the Cherry Poppin Daddies became a national sensation with their hit song Zoot Suit Riot. The song was a multiplatinum smash in 1998. Cherry Poppin Daddies was considered one of the most successful bands for swing revival. Over the years, the band has been known to play ska punk, glam rock, rockabilly, psychedelia, country, soul, and Latin music. With their wide range of genre diversity, their style may best be described as one of musical eclecticism.

Country Joe McDonald co-founded and led the psychedelic folk-rock band Country Joe and the Fish, the left-wing band of 60’s. He recorded 33 albums and has written hundreds of songs over a career spanning 40 years. Famous for playing an instrumental part at Woodstock, Country Joe became a legend. Today, he concentrates on solo work and often plays with the original members of the Fish. He continues to support radical and political causes.

Robbie Laws hit the ball out of the park at this year’s Portland Blues Festival and he brought his incredible guitar playing to downtown Salem. His deeply soulful guitar playing and vocals have garnered 18 Portland Cascade Blues Muddy Awards, ranging from Best Act, 4 times Best CD of the Year, 6 consecutive years as Best Electric Blues Guitarist, as well as Muddy Hall of Fame recipient.
The Ty Curtis Band recently earned 2nd place in the prestigious 2009 International Blues Challenge. With more than 2000 bands competing from nine countries and 36 states, 100 bands earned the right to go to Memphis where ten bands made it to Finals, where Ty Curtis Band took 2nd place. The Portland Cascade Blues Association awarded the band for Best New Act in 2008 and their cd, Stubborn Mind, as the Best Self Produced CD for 2008. The band is known for passionate vocals and driving guitar from Ty Curtis, Hank Shreve contributes harmonica, vocals, and three part harmonies with bass player Milo Fultz. Super “D” Brown is on drums. The Ty Curtis Band has opened for Chris Cain, Coco Montoya, The Doobie Brothers, and more. This may be one of the most dynamic performances of the festival.

Phamous Phases won the Best Band Poll at the International Pop Overthrow in Liverpool, England, in 2005. They are a band that has been together since 1993, playing a brand of music that is Beatles-esque in the White Album tradition. They have had 4 European tours. Guitarist Jesse Ruggles has been playing guitar for 47 years and within the circle of NW professional guitar players is considered one of the most, if not the top, talented guitar players around.

Fun House Strippers. Popular in Salem and with a regional draw, the Fun House Strippers describe their music as raw, rockin, soulful, and sexy. Most people will also add the word entertaining to that list.

The Fun House Strippers add a little different flair to an exciting line up of great musicians.

NW Blues All Stars is a compilation of some of the Pacific Northwest’s top blues guitarists coming together for Summer in the City Music Festival. Terry Robb, Jim Mesi, Jake Blair, Orvil Ivie, Garry Meziere, and Gary Burford will take the stage and bring on the blues.

Terry Robb is a 30 time winner for Best Acoustic Guitarist and was inducted into the CBA”S Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. He is considered one of the top acoustic blues guitarists on the West Coast.

Multiple award winner, Jim Mesi is a 9 time Best Guitarist, recipient of the Best NW Album of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement Award. Mesi is ranked as one of Portland’s top guitarists and is personally “blessed” by the great BB King. The Ivie/Mezziere Band performs blues, rock, swing, and contemporary guitar and both Orvil and Garry are highly requested and respected guitarists, considered top in the Northwest. The combination of all these top NW artists will be a performance you won’t want to miss.

Monti Amundson, “Big Monti.” When Monti gets compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan or Johnny Winter he just says “thank you”. The fact is, the big man has his own style. “I’m a blues guitar player in a band that plays rock n’ roll,” is how Monti explains it. He doesn’t so much as straddle the line between the genres as bend it, ignore it, or race back and forth across it until both sides go up in flames. The blues of Big Monti comes straight from the heart, cuts through your soul and is as real as it gets.

$100 Jayhawks are an up and coming Salem band that is getting plenty of stage time. They perform throughout the region and complimented last year’s Summer in the City event. Watch guitar player Chris Hooper as many say he will be going places. Mickey Bare, Tim Myles, Tim Knight, and Jeff Graham create a high energy R&R performance.

A huge "thank you" to our wonderful Music Production Manager Gary Burford (red hat) with friend Garry Meziere
during the NW Blues All Stars performance.

Pepe and the Bottle Blondes came back this year to Summer in the City by popular demand. Created in 1995 to bring back the “Copacabana style” enhanced with costuming, make up, and percussion and beat of Latin rhythms, they have an eclectic ensemble of saxophones, congas, percussion, trumpets, and three part harmonies. Pepe and the Bottle Blondes create a strong and stimulating stage performance that echoes the indulgence of the 1950’s nightclub chic.

Lloyd Jones has recorded six critically acclaimed albums, toured internationally, and received dozens of major awards and accolades. People can’t get enough of his swampy blues, back porch picking, funk, soul, roadhouse two- beats, and old school rhythm and blues. Lloyd describes his sound as, “combines New Orleans rhythms, the simplicity of Memphis music, and the rawness of the blues, all for the 21st century.” He has shared spotlights with Albert Collins, Cray, Raitt, McClinton, Taj Mahal, BB King, Buddy Guy, and many more.

Rock and Roll Cowboys, local to Salem, combine energy of rock, blues, and country and are getting more attention each time they hit the stage. Watch for some new faces and new sound as they perform at Summer in the City.
